At a guess, a route is sequence of points, where each point is a longitude/latitude position. Google maps has a web service for displaying a pin in its map images at a certain longitude/latitude (and the reverse - double click on a location to add a pin). Then you just add up the distance between each pair of pins n and n+1, and robert's yer farva's bruvva.
